Third places are the home of feminist backlash, but also homoerotic butt slaps and hugs- how should we define this space?

Nylund discusses how sports talk radio can "serve as a vehicle for discussing race and diversity issues." Do you think this medium is making any progress in regards to changing society or is it all just a lot of talk with little action?

Suzanne
Do you think men are more sexist and homophobic in a group than on the radio where they cannot be seen?

Collin
How can sports talk radio have such a large social impact if it is usually only consumed in someone's limited "third space?"

Chris
The interview subjects enjoy Jim Rome's "authenticity" (117).  Is Rome truly authentic on his show, or is he performing an act?  Is it dangerous if an audience misinterprets authenticity?

Meredith
Do you agree with Nylund's assertion that the term 'audience' is exchangeable with 'society'? How does this discredit the idea that certain radio programs create an audience by alienating other members of society?

Marquis
Would getting sports to not be homophobic help the view of women in anyway? Are they even linked?

Margaret
Are sports the only nationally acceptable "male language"?

Does sports talk radio even the playing field for minorities to voice their opinion based on the fact they don't feel inferior to white conservative men when they talk about sports compared to when politics, or anything else is being discussed?

Tommy
"Where public drinking and participation in sports serve as masculine rites of passage, their spaces and places often serve as a refuge from women."  If this quote is true and sports bars are a "refuge from women" then why at so many sports bars, including Big Woody's in Easton and Champs in State College (where I'm from),are the waitresses all very attractive young women?  Are they more of a refuge from the women in a man's personal life?

Peter
Can an argument be made for sports talk radio promoting homonormativity? Or does it only do this on the surface?

Greg
How is it ok for heterosexual men to be intimately touchy with one another at a sports bar during games, but it is not ok for homosexuals to be ok with touching each other at the same sports bar (hypothetically speaking and assuming they would be given weird looks by heterosexual men)?

Laquan
What are the "costs and benefits of male privilege" in today's society?

The author states that sports radio is owned by the same companies as political, right-wing radio (pg 157).  Is this why sports talk shows tend to lean to the right politically?

Greg
Like many other forms of media and arts we have discussed this semester, sports talk radio seems to have the same trends regarding regulation and corporate hegemony. In the case of sports talk radio, how does the loose regulation by the government and powerful regulation by the corporations hurt the abilities for radio hosts to discuss what they really want to discuss and to be more diverse? Corporations create norms that do not necessarily reflect what the host wants to talk about or what people necessarily want to here.

Allison O.
On page 118 it says, "Several participants believed that sports talk radio provides a safe haven in which men can bond and reaffirm their essential masculinity".  Do you think men feel unsafe in other spaces?

Ashley
Even with irony and sarcasm, is it possible to critically critique a radio show while simultaneously enjoying it? The author argues that this is a form of resistance - do you agree?

Allison P.
Nylund frequently reveals his privileged role as a white, heterosexual male sports fan. How does privilege influence "third spaces" such as sports talk radio?
