Does the portrayal of black culture in hip-hop undermine black advancement?

Kristyn
How does "representing" the status quo effectively reinforce it, rather than shed light on social issues?

Meredith
How do we draw a line between lyrics and reality?  While many rap songs are degrading towards black women and women in general, what is the connection between what people in the lyrics do and what people in reality do?

Beth
How come music doesn't share the same stigma as movies do when it comes to adult ratings?

Lauren B.
If there is so much sexism in rap artists lyrics and videos, why is it that so many women listen to rap music, and more importantly WANT to listen to it? If this music is so offensive and demeaning to women, why don't more women see it as a problem themselves?

Lauren H.
Do you ever stop and actually listen to lyrics of a song and realize that you didn't understand what it was saying and that you were enjoying a song that you disagreed with? Do you then choose to not listen to that song anymore or do you listen to it every time it comes on?

Cara
During a lecture a professor I know once said that historical caricatures of black people represent everything that mainstream society hates about itself. Do you think that hiphop (which according to Rose reflects sexism that is present in most media) represents an exaggerated and more intense version of everything that we hate about media in general?

Margaret
Do you think we should target hip-hop for sexism when it clearly is not the only or origional source of sexism?

Zach
We live in an age where we can listen to bands albums before they are pressed and released. Is it naive to think that people aren't consuming the smaller niche markets of rap? Is this assuming people have forgotten about Tupac and rappers of that decade? Are we merely looking to the flow of money to decide what people are consuming? Where could these assumptions leave us?

Katie
Do you think the Hip Hop music discussed in the article is attractive to its primary audience, the white youth, because it can be seen as a form of rebellion? Even though in a sense the Hip Hop music is mainstream in comparison because it is all so similar?

Marquis
With such a high number of consumption by white people, would a high number of African Americans make a difference if they stopped listening to rap?

Beth
Would whites be as attracted to the 'original' version of hip hop?  Has hip hop changed to cater to whites?

Jennifer
Do female hip hop artists such as Beyonce confuse young listeners, as sometimes she positively portrays women (i.e. 'Miss Independent,' 'Single Ladies,' and 'If I Were a Boy,') but then other times she feeds into a male dominated stereotype (i.e. 'Ego,' and 'Freakum Dress')

Ashley
Is it possible combat and/or resist the demeaning and objectifying images of women in hip hop music? Would such a movement gain support although it has not in the past?

Melissa
“It’s as if black teenagers have smuggled sexism and homophobia into American culture, bringing them in like unauthorized imports (8)” – Do you agree that hip hop (carried out by black teenagers) is solely to blame for the sexism and homophobia within American culture?

Allison O.
Do you think women are supporting sexism in the hip hop culture by appearing in their music videos?

Laquan
Why do black women feel a sense of loyalty to defend black men when they constantly demean them with their actions?

Simone
Do you think that there will ever be a space for women in hip hop that doesn't "embody forms of femininity empowered by masculine standards to express their power?"

Katy
If female hip hop artists stopped feeding into the cycle of sexual exploitation would their voices be heard? Or would they be silenced like Sarah Jones?

Suzanne
Is the reason for profanity and hyper-sexism in hip hop that people just aren't angry enough about it?

Meredith
In "There are Bitches and Hoes," Rose cites Ludacris who claims that, "rappers may degrade women, but we degrade men, too, so that pretty much cancels itself out" (171). How does this statement ironically support the notion that men can only be degraded "if women are already attached" to the degrading term being used?
Matt
The author claims that labeling men as bitches and hoes as insulting insulting to them as well, but for different reason, as it calls their masculinity into question.  Does this mean that sexism is destructive to men as well as women?

Cara
Do you think that if Tupac's song Dear Mama (a song thanking his mother for all the sacrifices she made to raise him) came out today that it would have been so succesful as it was in the 90's? What do you think about Kanye West 's song Hey Mama? Are moms the only ones that are excempt from being labeled bitches and hoes?
